Paul Harris (R-Vancouver) visited the Washougal School District as part of WAMOA-facilitated legislative school tours. Shown above is their visit to Hathaway Elementary School, which houses 296 Pre-K through fifth grade students. The school was originally built in 1934, and remodeled in 2002. It needs to be replaced or renovated, and may be part of a future bond issue when future enrollment requires additional space. In terms of security, there is a double-entry main entrance to the school, security cameras are located in different From left, Phil Partington, SW regional coordinator, OSPI school facilities and organization; Tyler Muench, locations, and the outside doors are director, OSPI advocacy & external affairs / governmental relations, OSPI; Aaron Hansen, assistantlocked during the school day. Among the four elementary schools in the district, Hathaway has the only dual-language program. English and Spanish classes are offered to students in grades K-2, with expansion plans to add grade 3 next year. The district also provides transportation of eligible K-2 students to the Dual Language program from the entire district. The school partners with Read NW, a community program that organizes reading buddies to build literacy skills. A covered play area was added through funds available from the 2015 bond issue, yet the playground equipment has been in place for 24 years. From a technology standpoint, there is wireless access in all the rooms, but existing copper cabling will not support future demands for bandwidth. The campus contains five portables, all of which are more than 20 years old, in which a developmental preschool, clothing closet and Head Start program are currently housed. Hathaway Elementary is a good place for students to learn.30 WAMOA JOURNALSUMMER 2024'
